Description:
PIK3CG is a crucial component of phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks), a family of lipid kinases that act on cellular membranes to regulate a wide range of signalling cascades. They mediate phosphorylation of the 3'-OH group of phosphoinositides to produce a second messenger (PIP3), which in turn activates the serine/threonine kinase AKT and other downstream effector pathways. The encoded protein is a class I catalytic subunit that, together with a specific regulatory subunit, forms an active heterodimeric class I PI3K. PI3Ks play key roles in various cellular functions including cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, survival and motility. The PIK3CG gene is located in a commonly deleted segment of chromosome 7 previously identified in myeloid leukemias. Several transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene. Polymorphisms in this gene associated with acute chest syndrome in sickle cell patients.
