Description:
This gene encodes for chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 5 (CCL5), also known as RANTES (Regulated upon Activation, Normally T-cell Expressed and Secreted). CCL5 plays a key role in the regulation of immune response. It functions as a chemoattractant for a variety of leukocytes, including T-cells, basophils and eosinophils, to the site of inflammation. It causes the release of histamine from basophils and activates eosinophils. It also induces the activation of natural killer cells into chemokine-activated killers (CHAK). It functions as an HIV-suppressive factor produced by CD8+ T-cells. CCL5 functions through activation of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), mainly the C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5). CCL5 has been linked to cancer progression and metastasis. Polymorphisms in this gene associated with risk of bacterial infection in individuals with sickle cell disease.
