Description:
Zeta (ζ)-globin is an alpha (α)-like haemoglobin. The ζ-globin polypeptide is synthesized in the yolk sac of the early embryo, while α-globin is produced throughout fetal and adult life. The ζ-globin gene is a member of the human α-globin gene cluster that includes five functional genes and two pseudogenes. The order of genes on the α-globin locus is: 5’-HBZ2-ΨHBZ1-ΨHBA2-ΨHBA1-HBA2-HBA1-θ-3’. The combination of two ζ chains and two epsilon (ε) chains forms the early embryonic haemoglobin Gower-1, and two ζ chains and two gamma (γ) chains forms the fetal haemoglobin Portland-1. A heterotetramer of two ζ chains and two beta (β) chains forms the haemoglobin Portland-2, detected in fetuses and neonates with homozygous alpha-thalassaemia.
