Names

Common Name: ADAM9 Type: Gene
Chromosome: 8 (NC_000008.11) Locus: NG_016335.1 (ADAM9)
HUGO Symbol: ADAM9 Full Name: ADAM metallopeptidase domain 9
Exons: 22 Introns: 21

Description:
This gene encodes a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease) family of membrane-anchored proteins that have important roles in cell adhesion, migration, proteolysis and signalling. ADAM9 is among those proteins that have a catalytic-site consensus sequence (HEXXH) in their metalloprotease domain, hence predicted to be catalytically active. Its cytoplasmic domain contains Pro-rich motifs, which act as binding sites for SH3-domain containing proteins. It has been implicated in heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor shedding, in the processing of the amyloid precursor protein, and in the regulation of cell motility by binding to α6β1 integrin. It contributes to heart development. It associated with diastolic dysfunction in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) in spite of conflicting evidence in a pre-clinical SCD mouse model.
