Names

Common Name: IL18 Type: Gene
Chromosome: 11 (NC_000011.10) Locus: NG_028143.1 (IL18)
HUGO Symbol: IL18 Full Name: interleukin 18
Exons: 6 Introns: 5

Description:
The encoded protein is a member of the interleukin 1 (IL-1) cytokine family, which is involved in numerous immunological responses. IL18 is processed from its 23 kDa proform by caspase-1 into its 18 kDa active form, and is best known for its capacity to stimulate interferon gamma production. Increased levels of circulating IL18 have been associated with development of heart failure. IL18 has been associated with decreased left ventricular contractility and myocardial relaxation in both mice and humans, possibly via p38 MAPK. Also, IL18 has been associated with diastolic dysfunction in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), following experimental validation in a mouse SCD model.
