Description:
This gene encodes a small nuclear protein that is characterized by a central arginine- and glycine-rich domain similar to that found in nucleolin and fibrillarin. The encoded protein may be involved in cell cycle progression and plays a role in the activation of estradiol-dependent transcription. It is a target of methylation by the PRMT1 and PRMT5 arginine methyltransferases, which are thought to regulate globin expression via histone modifications. Knockdown of FOP resulted in increased γ-globin gene expression in cultured primary human erythroid cells, suggesting that FOP is a critical modulator of fetal globin expression.
