Common Name: NR3C1 Type: Gene
Chromosome: 5 (NC_000005.10) Locus: NG_009062.1 (NR3C1)
HUGO Symbol: NR3C1 Full Name: nuclear receptor subfamily 3 group C member 1
Exons: 9 Introns: 8

Description:
The NR3C1 gene encodes glucocorticoid receptor, which can function both as a transcription factor that binds to glucocorticoid response elements (GRE) in the promoter of glucocorticoid responsive elements to activate their transcription, and as a modulator of other transcription factors. Found in cytoplasm but transported to the nucleus upon ligand binding. SNVs in NR3C1 gene are associated with increased utilization rate among sickle cell disease (SCD) patients seeking care for acute pain management. NR3C1 may influence the frequency of the crisis pain in SCD.
