GeneID: 448

Names

Common Name: PRDX2 Type: Gene
Chromosome: 19 (NC_000019.10) Locus: NG_029901.1 (PRDX2)
HUGO Symbol: PRDX2 Full Name: peroxiredoxin 2
Exons: 6 Introns: 5

Description:
The PRDX2 gene encodes a member of the peroxiredoxin family of antioxidant enzymes, which reduce hydrogen peroxide and alkyl hydroperoxides. The encoded protein plays an antioxidant protective role in cells, and it may contribute to the antiviral activity of CD8(+) T-cells. This protein prevents haemolytic anaemia from oxidative stress by stabilizing haemoglobin, thus making the PRDX2 gene a therapeutic target for patients with haemolytic anaemia. Evidence shows that PRDX2 is abundant in erythrocytes and protects red blood cells from oxidative stress, especially during erythropoiesis. PRDX2 works together with PRDX1 (ithaID: 447) to reduce oxidative damage in the circulating erythrocytes of β-thalassaemia intermedia patients by detoxifying ROS.
