Description:
MicroRNAs (miRNAs), such as MIRN214, are small, non-coding RNAs that play key roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. MIRN214 maps to chromosome 1, where it lies within intron 14 of the DNM3 gene. Oxidative stress can regulate miRNA expression, which, in turn, can modulate cellular redox status by regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant signaling. Oxidative stress in erythroid cells is a key driver of disease pathophysiology in haemoglobinopathies. Experiments showed an increase in miRNA214 expression in Hb H disease reticulocyte samples that correlated with ROS levels and anaemia severity, likely via suppression of ATF4 [GeneID: 379]. MIRN214 likely participates in oxidative pathways in erythroid cells that involve the ATF4 gene, a master transcription factor and regulator of γ-globin gene transcription.
