Description:
MicroRNAs (miRNAs), such as MIR199A1, are small, non-coding RNAs that play key roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by targeting specific mRNAs. The miR-199a-5p sequence is a product of MIR199A1. miR-199a-5p has been associated with NO metabolism. Its expression was increased in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients with leg ulcers, and associated with hemolytic biomarkers (e.g., NO metabolites, LDH, AST, GGT, iron and ferritin), in addition to an impaired clinical profile of sickle leg ulcers. miR-199a-5p may be part of the genetic background responsible for hemolytic pathophysiology in the occurrence and clinical evolution of sickle cell ulcers.
