Description:
ANXA2 is a member of the annexin family of calcium-regulated phospholipid-binding proteins. Annexins consist of a conserved α-helical core domain that harbours the calcium-binding motif, and a second divergent domain that undergoes post-translational modifications to specify individual annexin properties. They are involved in a variety of membrane-related functions including exocytosis, endocytosis and membrane trafficking. They play important roles in the regulation of cell growth and in signal transduction pathways. ANXA2 is implicated in bone mineralization and in the generation of the thrombolytic agent plasmin. Polymorphisms in this gene associated with osteonecrosis and stroke in sickle cell patients. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
