Description:
P-selectin is a cell surface adhesion molecule produced by vascular endothelial cells in response to an inflammatory stimulus. It is the largest of the selectins, with a mass of 140 kDa, stored in the alpha-granules of platelets and Weibel-Palade bodies of endothelial cells. This protein translocates to the surface upon stimulation and mediates the interaction of activated endothelial cells or platelets with leukocytes. The encoded protein binds with sialyl Lewis X (sLex)-type glycans expressed by most circulating leukocytes, which in turn start rolling along the activated endothelium and, in conjuction with other chemical mediators, migrate into the vascular wall. Polymorphisms asssociated with stroke and pulmonary hypertension in sickle cell patienets. Alternative splice variants may occur but are not well documented.
