Description

The Istituto Giannina Gaslini started its activity in 1938 and was recognized as national public children’s hospital and research institute in 1956. The activities of the Institute include health care, research, teaching, and continuing education of the hospital staff. Research is a strategic objective of the Institute and is mainly aimed at translating research results into the clinical practice. More than 42% of patients come from all regions of Italy. On average, all hospitalizations are more than 29,800/year, and outpatient admissions over 536,000/year. Emergency Department admissions are over 37,000/year. The Institute has been accredited by Joint Commission International since 2007 and has established collaboration agreements with over 250 national and international institutions. It counts over 25 reference and highly specialized centres. The Laboratory of Human Genetics is involved in diagnostic and research activity particularly in Mendelian human genetic diseases in Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetics.
