Description:
The HDAC9 is a member of the histone deacetylase (HDAC) family of enzymes that function in transcriptional regulation through histone modification and subsequent changes to the chromatin structure. Histones play a critical role in transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression, and developmental events. The HDAC9 gene belongs to Class II HDACs, which have sequence similarity to the yeast Hda1 protein. It is alternatively spliced to generate multiple protein isoforms with distinct biological activities and cellular localization patterns. It plays essential roles in heart development, T-cell functions, and hematopoiesis. Different polymorphisms of the HDAC9 gene associated with small vessel disease ischemic stroke among West Africans.
