Description:
BCL2L1 is a member of the BCL-2 gene family and has two major protein isoforms, BCL-XL and BCL-XS. It can form homodimers and heterodimers with other members of the BCL-2 family. It can act as an antiapoptotic (BCL-XL) and proapoptotic (BCL-XS) regulator, involved in a wide variety of cellular activities including cell differentiation and survival. The promoter of this gene contains various sequence motifs for regulatory elements, such as the erythroid transcription factor GATA1. Overexpression of BCL2L1 enhanced HbF expression and F-cell production in HUDEP-1 and primary human adult erythroid cells without changes in erythroid cell differentiation, proliferation or survival. BCL2L1 is a candidate regulator of HbF expression.
