Names

Common Name: CAT Type: Gene
Chromosome: 11 (NC_000011.10) Locus: NG_013339.2 (CAT)
HUGO Symbol: CAT Full Name: catalase
Exons: 13 Introns: 12

Description:
The CAT gene encodes catalase, a key antioxidant enzyme in the bodies defense against oxidative stress. Catalase is a heme enzyme that is present in the peroxisome of nearly all aerobic cells. Oxidative stress plays a role in the development of many chronic or late-onset diseases, including thalassaemia. Genetic variance in CAT associated with improved hydroxyurea (HU) response in patients with sickle cell disease based on improvement in infammatory markers measured. A lower catalase expression and activity may lead to higher HU bioavailability.
