Description:
The Myc-associated zinc finger protein (MAZ) was identified and characterized as a regulatory protein associated with MYC gene expression. It functions as a DNA-specific transcription factor and is often found at genomic binding sites adjacent to CTCF, the chromatin architectural factor. MAZ plays a role in erythropoiesis; it binds to the promoter of the alpha-globin genes and its shRNA-mediated knowckdown impairs differentiation in primary human erythroid cells. Genome-wide mapping in primary human erythroid cells revealed that MAZ also occupies active promoters as well as GATA1-bound enhancer elements of key genes within the erythroid differentiation pathway.
