                         Description:

The PRDX1 gene encodes a thiol reductase that plays critical roles in oxidative and thermal stress defense mechanisms through its abilities to metabolize hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and act as a molecular chaperone, respectively. Might participate in the signaling cascades of growth factors and tumor necrosis factor-alpha by regulating the intracellular concentrations of H2O2. PRDX1 gene expression and protein levels were found to be elevated in the reticulocytes and erythrocytes of β-thalassaemia intermedia patients compared to healthy controls. Possible role in protecting red cells from oxidative damage.
